Write a précis on the following passage in about 150 words. Suggest a suitable title.

The test of a great book is whether we want to read it only once or more than once. Any really great book we want to read the second time, and every additional time that we read it we find new meanings and new beauties in it. But we cannot consider the judgement of a single individual infallible. The opinion that makes a book great must be the opinion of many. For even the greatest critics, are opt to have certain dullness, certain in appreciations. Carlyle, for example could not endure Browning, Byron could not endure some of the greatest English poets. A man must be many sided to utter off trust worthy estimate of many books. We may doubt the judgement of single critics at times. But there is no doubt possible in regard to the judgement of generations. If we do not at once receive anything good in a book which has been admired and praised for hundreds of years, we may be sure that by trying, by studying it carefully we shall at least be able to feel the reason for this admiration and praise. The best of all libraries for a poor man would be a library entirely com-posed of such great works only books which have passed the test of time.

This then would be the most important guide for us in the choice of readings. We should read only the books we want to read more than once, nor should we buy any others, unless we have some special reason for so investing money. The second fact demanding attention is the general character of the value that lies hidden in all such great works. They never become old; their youth is immortal. A great book is not to be comprehended by a young person at the first reading expect in a superficial way. Only the surface; the narrative is enjoyed. No young man can possible see at first reading the qualities of a great book. But according to a man experience of life, the text will unfold new meanings to him. The book that delighted us at eighteen if it be a good book will look to us different at thirty years of age. At forty we shall re-read it wondering why we never saw how beautiful it was before. At fifty or sixty years of age, the same facts will repeat themselves. एक महान पुस्तक की परीक्षा उसे केवल एक बार या एक से अधिक बार पढ़ने की चाह से होती है। किसी भी महान पुस्तक को जब हम द्वितीय बार पढ़ना चाहें और अतिरिक्त बार पढ़ें तो हम उसमें नया अर्थ और नया सौंदर्य पाते हैं, परन्तु हम किसी एक व्यक्ति के नज़रिया को महत्व नहीं दे सकते हैं। वह विचार जो एक पुस्तक को महान बनाती है, वह बहुमत की होनी चाहिए, क्योंकि उत्कृष्ट आलोचक भी उसका सही अंकन नहीं कर पाते। उदाहरण के लिए, कार्लाइल, ब्राउनिंग को सहन नहीं कर पाये और बायरन ने कई अंग्रेजी कवियों को। कई बार हम आलोचकों के न्याय पर शंका प्रकट करते हैं, परन्तु पीढ़ी दर पीढ़ी के आलोचकों के न्याय पर शंका नहीं कर सकते। वर्षों से प्रशंसित पुस्तक से यदि हम कुछ भी प्राप्त न कर सकें, तो प्रयास करके ध्यानपूर्वक पढ़कर कम से कम उसकी प्रशंसा के कारण को जान सकते हैं। गरीब व्यक्ति के लिए, बेहतरीन पुस्तकालय वह है जिसमें ऐसी पुस्तकें हों जो सदियों से प्रशंसित हों।

हमें उन्हीं पुस्तकों को पढ़ना चाहिए जिन्हें हम पुनः पढ़ना चाहें। ऐसी महान पुस्तकें कभी पुरानी नहीं होतीं। युवा अवस्था में उनका केवल सतही अर्थ समझ आता है, परन्तु जीवन के अनुभव बढ़ने पर वही पुस्तक नए अर्थ प्रकट करती है। अठारह वर्ष की आयु में आकर्षित करने वाली अच्छी पुस्तक तीस, चालीस, पचास या साठ वर्ष की आयु में अलग और अधिक सुंदर अर्थ दे सकती है। एक महान पुस्तक पढ़ने वाले के मस्तिष्क के विकास के अनुपात में विकसित होती है।
